Country Club First
The numbers show John McCain places his Country Club buddies ahead of ordinary Americans.

Both McCain and Obama want to return billions of dollars in tax cuts to American taxpayers.

But don't buy your private jet just yet, because you'll have to share that money. McCain and Obama want to divide that money up among taxpayers.

Now, they could they split those billions evenly & give everyone an equal piece. But instead they're distributing the money unevenly, based on to their views of where the money will do more good.

(How would you pay back thousands of dollars? Do some people need or deserve the money more than others? How can you tell who needs money? Can you judge who deserves money, regardless of their need for it? Does compassion play any part in that judgement? When does a payback become a purchase? Do you expect anything in return?)

The independent experts at the Tax Policy Board looked at the numbers, and asked: Who gets how much? The below graph from the Washington Post summarizes their findings.(1)

  • If you're among the poorest Americans making under $19,000 a year:
    • You receive $19 under McCain's plan.
    • You receive $567 under Obama's plan -- 30 times what McCain's plan pays.

  • If you make less than $600,000 per year:
    • You receive a payment, or pay no additional taxes, under both McCain's and Obama's plans.

  • If you're one of the wealthiest 1% of Americans (making more than $600,000 a year):
    • You receive $45,631 under McCain's plan -- 2,400 times the $19 his plan gives the poorest Americans.
    • You pay $115,974 under Obama's plan, helping cover the costs of paying the poorest Americans. Obama's plan requires the wealthiest one percent to help those who have less.

  • The poorer you are:
    • The less money McCain's plan gives you.
    • The more money Obama's plan gives you.
The numbers speak for themselves: McCain puts Country Club First. His plan rewards the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Obama's plan rewards average working Americans.
